How can we help? » Benefits & Tax credits » Mr W is finding it quite lonely as a single dad
Posted by Information Worker on 20 October 2010
Mr W is looking after his two boys by himself. He has found it difficult to find a job that fits in with their school day and holidays, and which also pays enough to cover the bills. He has heard on the news about changes in benefits to lone parents and is worried about how this might affect him. He is also finding it quite lonely as a single dad – most of the other parents he sees are women, and he doesn’t have any family support.
The Hub can put him in contact with a benefits advisor to explain how the benefit changes will affect him; they can also advise him about ‘in work’ benefits, so he knows what extra help will be available if he finds work. Staff at the JET Centres could help him with his job hunt, as could the New Deal Advisors who run sessions at his local Children’s Centre.
Many local Children’s Centres have Dad’s clubs or sessions which would help him to meet other dads and share tips on parenting.
