Mrs J has had to take time off work to look after her youngest child

Posted by Information Worker on 20 October 2010

Mr and Mrs J have 3 children. The youngest child has severe health problems and has had several emergency admissions to Alder Hey. Mrs J has had to take time off work to look after him. Her employer was understanding at first but has now lost patience. Mrs J doesn’t want to give up her job, but she is starting to dread going into work. She was already anxious about her son and this extra stress is too much for her.

The Hub can put her in contact with several sources of help. An Employment law advisor can tell her what her rights are at work.

An advocate could help her plan what she wants to say to her boss, and come with her to a meeting at work to help try to find a solution.

A benefits advisor could check that Mr and Mrs J were claiming the right benefits - perhaps the Hub can help them find an advisor with particular knowledge of the kind of health needs their child has. They may be able to claim Disability Living Allowance for their son which would help with their financial pressures.

The Hub’s Information workers could also put Mr and Mrs J in contact with support groups, where they could talk with other parents in similar situations.
