How can we help? » Benefits & Tax credits » Mrs T is looking after her grandchildren because her daughter has drug problems
Posted by Information Worker on 18 October 2010
Mrs T is looking after her young grandchildren because her daughter has drug problems. Mrs T is finding it exhausting looking after the children; she is also struggling to keep them all on just her pension, and in her small flat. Her daughter still claims benefit for the children, but rarely sees them.
A benefits advisor can help make sure Mrs T receives the right benefits. A family solicitor can also help sort out the legal arrangements to ensure that Mrs T is recognised as the children’s carer, so she gets the right support. If she needs someone to help make sure her views and wishes are fully heard in the meetings, an advocate might be able to attend with her. The Hub’s Information Workers and the advocate could also assist Mrs T in finding out whether there would be any more suitable housing options, if she wanted to explore this.
The Hub can tell Mrs T about support in her area for families, including the nursery and activities at the nearby Children’s Centre. This would give her some time to herself, as well as fun time with the children away from their flat. If Mrs T decides to move, the Hub can put her in contact with the best people to help.
